The Buffalo Irish Arts Society

Irish Music Scholarship Fund

(Applications considered on a case by case basis)

Description: Every summer holds excellent opportunities for learning Irish traditional music. From Willie Clancy Week in Milltown Mallbay, County Clare to the Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College in Western North Carolina, participants benefit from intensive instruction with master instrumentalists in the tradition. The goal of the scholarship is to help send local musicians to one of the many week-long Irish music instruction camps so that they might benefit from the wisdom of some of the finest players and share some of their expertise and enthusiasm for Irish music upon their return to the area. In addition to furnishing tuition money, the scholarship also funds one year of membership in Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, an organization based in Ireland whose mission is to promote Irish traditional music, language and culture. Buffalo Irish Arts is the Buffalo-Martin Wynne Branch of Comhaltas.

Guidelines: The scholarship will be awarded annually to a local students in the Buffalo-Niagara region* wishing to further their proficiency in the playing of Irish traditional music. The amount of the award is based on funds available and the extent to which the award will complement The Buffalo Irish Arts Society’s commitment to enriching Irish traditional music in the area. In addition to the requirement of some novice to intermediate ability on a particular instrument, we advance the following preferred qualifications:

  1. Those who demonstrate an earnest dedication to learning to play an instrument in the Irish tradition as demonstrated by attendance at Irish traditional music performances.

  2. Those who demonstrate the capacity to benefit from the workshop in which they plan to enroll either through participation in local seisiúns or through an audition for the scholarship committee.

  3. Those who can demonstrate intermediate proficiency in their instrument.
